Design Glossary

Everything you need to know about design and print.

Web Design

72 DPI
72 Dots Per Inch. This is the resolution of images used on the web. This is lower than print artwork, which reduces the file size and enables images to load faster.

BANNER
Often used to promote services and products by catching the viewers attention. These can incorporate flash animation to make them more eye catching.

CSS
Cascading Style Sheets. A form of web coding used to specify styles for texts and also advanced positioning of elements on a page.

DOMAIN
A web address pointing to a server that holds the website.

ECOMMERCE
Online shopping. Ecommerce systems are increasingly popular as the demand to sell online grows.

FLASH
A technology used for creating motion graphics and interactive content. Often used on sites to impress viewers visually.

HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language. The standard programming language for developing web pages. CSS is combined with HTML to provide greater control of the look and functionality of the website.

HYPERLINK
A link to another page, email address or file download. Found on almost every website and usually indicated by an underline.

JPG / GIF
Two formats for images used on the web. Both offer a compressed file which loads fast but is still of a high enough quality for viewing.

PAYPAL
Online payment method, safe and secure from the people behind eBay. Pay pal offer shopping systems which we can implement into web sites.

RGB
Red, Green, Blue. The 3 colours that make up all colour combinations used on screen.

UPLOAD
The process of copying website pages to a web server for anyone on the internet to view.

URL
The address of a page or file on the internet is referred to as a URL.

Graphic Design

300 DPI
300 Dots Per Inch. The resolution of images used in print. The higher number of dots ensures a high quality print.

BLEED
Producing artwork larger than required allows for bleed. This is excess print which is cut away when the paper is trimmed to size. This ensures no white borders are present on full coverage printing.

CMYK
Stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black. The four colours used in standard printing.

FONTS
Different text style used for print. Fonts can also be referred to as typefaces and are typically split into Serif and Sans Serif groups.

GSM
Grams per square metre. The way in which paper thickness is measured. The thicker the paper the more it will weigh per square metre.

HIGH RESOLUTION
Referring to images with a resolution of 300dpi or above. High resolution graphics are required for print, low resolution are used on the web.

PANTONE
A colour reference chart developed for accurate colour reproduction from one print house to another.

PDF
Portable Document Format. Developed for sending highly compatible files between computers and systems. PDF files can contain graphics, text, web data, charts, logos and much more and can be viewed on any machine with Adobe Reader installed.

PHOTOSHOP
Industry standard image manipulation software. Used for retouching, resizing, artwork production and much more. Part of the Adobe suite of programs which also include Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Acrobat and Fireworks.

PROOF
A low resolution version of artwork used for approval. Proofs are supplied to clients to check colours, spelling, layout and any other information. Once a proof is approved, artwork is sent to print.

VECTOR
Vector art is unique in the way that it can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. This is because the graphics are based on mathematical equations rather than pixels. Where possible we try to make as much of our artwork Vector.
